Georges Mathieu

Georges Mathieu was born on 27 January 1921 in Boulogne-sur-Mer. His artistic debut dates back to 1942: after a brief period as a landscape painter and portrait painter, his artistic interest is oriented towards an abstract and expressionist research that makes his automatism, intuition and emotion his guiding principle. In 1947 Mathieu, together with Camille Bryen, became the promoter of a new non-figurative artistic movement Psychique which proposes, in clear opposition to the geometric abstraction in vogue in Paris, a new abstraction, gestural and lyric, that stripped of traditions and of the prevailing rules until then, in order to highlight purely pictorial phenomena.
