Renato Barisani
Biography
Renato Barisani (Naples, 15 November 1918 - Naples, 3 September 2011) was an Italian sculptor and painter.
He graduated in sculpture in 1937 at the Art Institute of Naples and, thanks to a scholarship, he completed a two-year course at the Istituto per le Industrie Artistiche of Monza where he graduated after attending the Semeghini courses. , Pagano, Pica and Marini. He returned to Naples and attended the Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in Sculpture in 1941.
In 1940 he won the first prize for sculpture and bas-relief at the Prelittori dell'arte. In 1941 he was again the winner of a sculpture award and, the following year, a scholarship.
Participates from 1947 to 1950 to the experiences of the "South Group" of Naples; from 1950 to 1955, together with R. De Fusco, G. Tatafiore and A. Venditti, constitutes the "Gruppo Neapolitan Arte Concreta", moving in the field of abstract research; from 1953 to 1957 he is present in the "Movimento Arte Concreta" of Milan, participating in almost all the exhibitions, including historical ones, in Italy and abroad; from 1960 to 1963 he is present in the "New European School" of Lausanne. In 1962 he won the Swiss Abstract Painting Award.
In 1963 one of his works was exhibited at the exhibition Contemporary Italian Paintings, set up in some Australian cities.
He was invited to the Roman Quadriennali of 1948, 1965 and 1986. At the Venice Biennial of 1962 and 1972.
In 1977 he exhibited his first major anthology at the Museum of Villa Pignatelli in Naples, in which he presented works made from 1940 to 1975. In 1993 he was awarded a recognition by the Krasner Pollock Foundation in New York.
They are years of experimentation with collages and mosaics. In October 2000 the City of Naples dedicated a large anthological exhibition to the Castel dell'Ovo, with works from the 50s to 2000.
Constant, from the second half of the 50s, remains the commitment also in the production of ceramics, glass fusions, jewelry and art jewelry. Weaving and tapestries are among the artist's last interests.
In 2008 the Palazzo delle Arti in Naples dedicated a personal exhibition with the most recent works: paintings, sculptures and jewels.
He died in Naples, at the age of almost 93, while he is currently running an exhibition on Jazz and abstraction in Forio d'Ischia.
In July 2017 the Municipal Art Gallery of Contemporary Art of the city of Gaeta dedicated a new anthological exhibition with over 200 works, some unpublished. Beyond paintings and sculptures, frames, ceramics, tapestries, mosaics and jewelery are displayed.
